Assembling & installation instructions PDF Print E-mail

The AquaGenie HOB instant reverse-flush power filter comes partly pre-assembled and includes:

• Filter body with ingenious waste settling design and waste removing drain.
• Over 500 BioPearls for super efficient mechanical and biological filtration.
• Debris flushing siphon set with priming hand-pump and flexible hose.
• Optional lateral water return gutter and large chemical filter cartridge
• Super reliable & quiet maintenance free pump.

Step 1: First assemble the water intake pipe and rinse the BioPearls under the tap in cold water.
Step 2: Place BioPearls inside filter and shake the filter gently for even distribution of the pearls.
Step 3: Position the water intake assembly in the pump compartment of the filter.
Step 4: Hang your filter onto your fish-tank and fill the pump compartment with water till it overflows.
Step 5: Place your carbon cartridge in ridges of the overflow window.
Step 6: Once plugged in, the filter will take about 10 seconds to prime before the water starts flowing.

Filter flushing instructions:

First do not stop the power-head, but turn the water flow regulating valve to minimum.

a) Connect the siphon hose to the stand-pipe. With your left hand hold the end of the flexible hose above the water-level of your tank and insert the blue hand-pump into the end of the flexible hose. To start the siphon, just depress the blue pump several times till you see the water coming and filling the flexible hose. Now remove the priming pump and close off the end of the hose with the palm of your right hand. The best way for using the blue priming pump is a rapid succession of short pump actions.

b) Once priming is completed and the flexible hose is filled with dirty water, release this water into a bucket for 2-3 seconds, to remove about half a gallon of dirty water. For the first time, use a large bucket as the flush is fast and powerful. As the water keeps flowing into the siphon hose, a second rinsing flush may happen automatically and to stop the flush of water just keep the end-outlet of the flexible hose above the water level in the bucket..

c) The water-flow in the filter will restart automatically and be visible again almost immediately

d) To remove the flushing hose, carefully wiggle it from left to right and pull it out gently.

e) When flushing is completed, please do not forget to fully open your water control valve and to top up the water level in your tank with about the same amount of water as you have just taken out. When you flush out the debris you remove many nitrates and phosphates causing detritus, but only regular checking of these nutrients levels will tell you if additional water changes are still necessary or not?

Important tips and “reminders”

90% of fish mortality is caused by overfeeding and/or overstocking, especially before the biological filter is fully operational and this takes about 5 – 6 weeks after installation. Any food given must be eaten by the fish within 2-3 minutes, and with an AquaGenie HOB filter it is best to use floating fish-food, either flakes or pellets only, to avoid any food getting into the filter or under the rocks or plants.

This filter will catch any size particle moving in the tank-water and to increase this capability, air-stones can be placed in different locations in the tank, and the sand/gravel should be fine enough to prevent debris from getting stuck in it. If necessary gently stir-up the lower water-level of the tank once a week with your hand or a long plastic or wooden stick.

For tanks where the nitrates have somehow built up to unhealthy levels, water changes (50–80%) will be needed, always adjust the temperature and pH of top-up water to the same parameters of the tank water before starting your water changes. Remember, only long-lasting negligence will create this extreme situation.

You should never remove the BioPearls once your filter has been installed.
The BioPearls will never get clogged but flushing should be done regularly, best once or twice per week. Only about 3 months of total negligence may put an AquaGenie filter temporary “out of order” biologically even when the filter is not clogged and this is of course not advisable. Never replace the BioPearls with any other substrate or the debris extracting capabilities of your AquaGenie filter will be affected or even stop.

If you want to change a tank equipped with an AquaGenie filter from fresh water to marine or vice-versa, you must not dry or clean the BioPearls as the bacteria are the same for both, fresh water and/or sea water. Just change the water in your tank without doing anything else to your filter.

If you add an AquaGenie filter to a tank that has another filter already, do not remove this filter for the first six weeks after installing your AquaGenie filter, because the “biological” stage of your AquaGenie filter will need that time to get operational.

In the first few weeks after installation of an AquaGenie filter, some micro algae bloom may occur because these algae are so small they pass through the filter. The tank water may become cloudy, and there are many different algae remedies to treat and eliminate this problem in fresh-water tanks. Usually these algal blooms disappear by themselves after several flushes. If this happens in marine tanks, one has to reduce feeding and do bigger water-changes till the algae disappear by it-self, but never use algae cures if the live stock includes marine macro algae, live corals or anemones.

If you go on vacation and ask an inexperienced neighbour or friend to feed your fish, tell him to come and feed only once a week so he will not be able to overfeed. Please note that healthy fish can survive without any food for about 3 weeks, so if you follow this rule your holiday will only act as a “slimming” cure for your fish, not as a death sentence because of over-feeding by a well intentioned friend.

It is well known that 89% of fish mortality is due to over-feeding and/or over-stocking, the other 9% is due to bad water conditions resulting from inadequate, inefficient or neglected filters, 1% from accidents and 1% from or old-age. When you use an AquaGenie filter and follow these instructions you will have effectively eliminated 98% of all previous causes of fish mortality.

The AquaGenie HOB filter is recommended for small to medium (temperate or tropical) fresh-water fish-tanks and marine or live-reef aquariums; it will save you time, stress, water, livestock and money. Aquarium maintenance will never be easier!

Only the Aqua Genie HOB has 4 filtration stages for maximum benefits

Stage 1 - Super efficient mechanical filter by debris settling in spaces between 500 highly porous sintered glass BioPearls.

Stage 2 - Double action biological filter (bacteria on filter media).
With ammonia/nitrites reducing aerobic bacteria on the outer layers of the BioPearls plus nitrate reducing anaerobic bacteria in the core of these BioPearls (pls see specifications explained in relevant Biopearls page on this wesite).

Stage 3 - Chemical filtration with large disposable cascading activated carbon cartridge.

Stage 4 - Instant reverse-flush dirt removal system.
Your AquaGenie HOB filter will evacuate most accumulated organic waste and detritus by a powerful short back-flush. This action prevents build up of waste, minimizes the load on the bio-filter and avoids production of other toxins. Each flush will remove most organic and in-organic debris but will not affect the bacteria. When used properly, the AquaGenie filter can effectively slow down the production of nitrates and phosphates and may reduce the scale and frequency of additional water changes; it also removes the need for vacuuming when used with coarse sand instead of gravel on the floor of the fish-tank.

Only AquaGenie filters using BioPearls as filter media are able to keep all 4 noxious aquarium nutrients levels at zero or close to zero!
